24 hour salad

Recipe 4
24 Hour Salad
4 eggs yolks
1/2 c. sugar
juice of 2 lemons strained
1 pt. whipping cream
1 no. 2 1/2 can white cherries
1 lb. marshmallows (cut up)
1 no. 2 can pineapple (sliced)

Mix together egg yolks, sugar, lemon juice, cook, stirring constantly till thick. Cool, add whipped cream and add all the rest. Let stand 12-24 hours. Top with cherries.
Serves 16-20 large portions

This recipe card was well used and worn. Can't say I am big fan of fruit salad, especially with raw egg yolks in it #%@!, but I know that is something that is served a lot back then and still today. It's an easy dessert, and easy to bring to someone's house. I do like that this one is simple, just pineapple. I would have thought it would have included mandarin oranges...she always had those on hand!

My other grandma Veronica made this a lot as well. It is so 60's and 70's !! Can't you just see the table....chicken, potato salad and fruit salad!

buttermilk rolls

Recipe 3
Buttermilk Rolls
2 1/2 c. butter
1 t. baking powder
1 t. salt

Heat 1 cup of buttermilk just to lukewarm. Crumble dissolved cake fast yeast in milk. Stir in 1/4 t. baking powder and 1 t. sugar. Stir in 3 T. melted butter and mix well. Add sifted dry ingredients.
Turn out on floured board, knead lightly just until smooth-Make rolls at once. Place in pans and finish with butter. Rise until light about 1 hour. Bake in quick oven 400 degrees about 10 mins.

I know back in the day when you sat down to dinner, bread was a must. I think bread is a comfort food. Whenever I make a "nice" dinner, which is not saying much, I always serve some form of bread. A baguette, a Pillsbury loaf or rolls I make in the oven or simply bread and butter. My husband and children are bread people. I can take it or leave it, knowing it fills up my stomach quickly.

My Grandma Bea was the best at making a dinner feel special. She got out her best china, glasses and silverware. She thought of everything. The table cloth, the napkins, fabric of course, and the centerpiece. I know my Mom and sister are the same way now....I try to be, but never use fabric napkins, too fussy for me.

Name on recipe- Mrs. Clyde Phillips

Cherry, ginger, white chocolate and cream cheese cake

I have gone through most of the recipes in her 2 boxes. I am always intrigued by the ones that seem to be the most used. This cake in particular I do not remember her making, but some of these recipe cards go back to when she got married, so Sonni or Dad may remember these growing up. I can just see her in her kitchen with a beautiful dress on, that she made of course, and apron, making this recipe for her family.

Family was everything to her. She loved to celebrate and have parties. I have seen many pictures when Dad and Sonni were young with extended family. Uncle Charlie and Aunt Ruth and children were usually in those pictures, having a good time, laughing and celebrating!

candy divinity

Candy Divinity
2 1/2 c. white sugar
2/3 c. cold water
2/3 c. white syrup
2 egg whites
1 t. flavoring
nut meats or chopped fruits

Boil syrup, water and sugar to a hard boil. Pour over the stiffly beaten whites slowly. Beat. Add nuts and when it begins to look dull drop by the teaspoon onto oiled paper.

Recipe 1 is the inspiration for the name of this blog....divinity. As we all know in her family, this was her staple, as you can tell by the very stained recipe card. This was the recipe we think of when we think of Grandma Bea. Not for eating it as much as making it with her at their Cass Street apartment. We had lots of giggles and laughs in her kitchen, mixing with her pride and joy, her blue mixer Betsy. She wanted us to know her history, and to remember her. I am hoping this blog will spark memories, and remember all the good times we had with her.
